Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 8 hp B&S Vertical Shaft Engine, valve spring compressor, spring retainer

Question
Hi John,
I have an old Murray Rider that I am reworking the engine.
Model 190707  Type 5631-01  Code 78011611. So I am asking you how to remove the exhaust valve retainer so that I can remove and inspect the valve. The intake valve and tappet came out easily...But I am having the dickens of a time getting that exhast valve out because of the retainer and spring...Please keep in mind I am using tools that I have handy or think may work....I have not invested in a valve spring retaining tool for this job.  any suggestions....even a give it up gary and go buy the spring retaining tool would satisfy me as long as that valve will come on out of there....Thanks....GH

Hello Gary:

>>Sorry for the Delay. This Question was Located in the Question Pool and I can Only Answer Questions from the Question Pool when I am Not Answering My Questions here or at the Other Site I Answer Questions at.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select "Click Here For The Parts Menu". Then Select B. Then Select Briggs. Then Select "Click Here If You Don't Have Your Part Numbers". Now Select the File (using the first 2 Numbers of your Model Number) for your Model. Select the File # 19.
>>Using 2 Standard (Flat) Screw Drivers, 1 on each Side of the Spring Retainer Clip, Lift the Spring Retainer.
>>Sometimes you have to Hit the Valve with a Hammer to make the Valve Drop out of the Retainer and the Retainer Clips Release from the Retainer and Valve.
>>You can use a Flat Piece of Metal that is Slightly Smaller than the Crankcase Breather Hole and Make a Valve Spring Compressor for this Engine Also.
>>Simply make a Slot in the Middle of the Metal that will Allow you to Raise the Spring and Retainer, but will Allow the Retainer Clips to be Removed once the Valve Stem is Pushed Down to Clear the Clips from the Retainer.
>>Grease is Used on the Valve to Hold the Clips in Place when you Assemble the Retainer and have it and the Spring Held in the Up Position so the Clips will Stay in Place when you Lower the Retainer onto the Clips.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I Hope to be Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
