Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Leaf Blower, craftsman leaf blower, exhaust port

Question
Hi John,

I own a Craftsman leaf blower, model # 517.797942, that's about 14 years old.  I put in a new spark plug, so it now starts easily, but the engine still does not run properly, so I suspect it needs a new carburetor.  Even at full throttle, it generates barely enough power to blow anything, and I've tried adjusting the L, H, and idle screws with only limited success.

Sears wants about $55 plus $14 shipping for the carburetor, which doesn't seem cost effective.   Is there a cheaper source of parts, or can these carburetors possibly be rebuilt?  Thanks!

Answer
Hello David:

>>Before Considering a New Carburetor; Check the Muffler and Exhaust Port.
>>The Following is a Basic Instruction File for Doing a Diagnostic on the Engine for this Problem. Any Input is Appreciated.
>>**Remove the Muffler and Make Sure the Exhaust Port is Clear.
>>If it is, then Try to Start the engine with the Muffler Off.
>>If it Starts and Runs Properly, then Clean the Spark Arrestor Screen in the Muffler or Replace the Muffler if Required. Some Mufflers will Split apart for Cleaning of the Screen and Some are Screwed/Bolted to the Outside and on Others the Muffler has to be Replaced.
>>Have you Priced the Carburetor at Outdoor Distributors (http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ )?
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I Hope to be Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
