Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Yardman transmission, interference fit, peerless model

Question
QUESTION: I just sent in a question.  I think that I may have put the incorrect MTD part numberon my Yardman 604H lawn tractor.  The sticker reads 618-04133A.  The partss manual for the machine had the other number which I quoted.
Sorry to have made the error

QUESTION: Sorry John.  You are correct.

This was my original question and my follow-up correction should have gone to the same expert.  So I don't know if you answer this too.

Your question was

"I have a Yardman 604H 46" triple blade lawn tractor.  This has a single speed transmission fitted with a variable diameter pulley.  When going a slope every few yards it lurches forward quickly for about 6" before resuming normal speed.  I am wondering if the main drive shaft or the differential ring gear is mission a tooth or is there some sort of interference fit on a gear that is slipping.  It runs smoothly up the same slope.

The transmission has a part number (MTD's?) of 618-04034 which I believe has been replaced by MTD-753-05851.  The casing itself seems to have 718-04018.

Any ideas as to the cause of the problem and is this a Peerless transmission?  If so what is the Peerless model number?

I can add further that the transmission has been getting progressively noisier from about 150 hrs on.  The mower is now up to about 240 hrs.  I don't want the mower to suddenly freewheel down a slope.

Any assistance would be gratefully received.

Malcolm"

Answer
Hello Again Malcolm:

>>No Worries. It Happens all the Time.
>>From your Description it Sounds like the Belt is Slipping on the Variable Speed Pulley or there is a Tooth Missing from the Ring Gear in the Transaxle.
>>Usually if a Tooth is Missing the Transaxle will Hesitate as you Described at Regular Intervals all the Time on Level Ground or Going up a Hill.
>>I Suggest you Clean and Lightly Lubricate the Sliding Sheave of the Variable Speed Pulley and make Sure it is Moving Freely.
>>If the Floating Sheave is Moving Freely, then
>>You will need to Disassemble the Transaxle, Inspect and Repair it as Required.
>>For Better Assistance, Send me the Model Numbers Off the Mower, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Model Numbers are Usually Located Under the Seat (Ride On Mowers) on a Sticker or Tag on the Body. Examples: Honda Model Numbers; HR194 PXA, HRB215K2 SXA, ect. Example: Sears Model Numbers; 123.123456 .
>>MTD (OEM of Yard Man Equipment) Rarely shows the Transaxle OEM in it's Breakdowns. This Unit can have a Peerless or a Dana/Foote Transaxle in it.
>>On the Transaxle is an OEM Identification Plate. Send me the Information Off of This Plate, Please. With this Information, I can Locate the Proper Manuals and Better Assist You.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I Hope to be Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
