Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Poulan Pro mod. # pr1842stc wont start, proper manuals, clutch pedal

Question
QUESTION: Hello John, I have a poulan pro mod.# pr1842stc. #1, It won't start because the brake/clutch pedal won't engage to lock the brake and I have no brake. It was working fine and when I got off to dump my cart, I couldn't restart. #2 It had been making a sort of gnawing?... sound when I let the brake out. I had recently adjusted the brake because it was hard to engage, like it was binding. How many washers should be installed at the end of the brake rod? It has some sort of fiber type washer and it seams to be worn.I had done a search and I didn't find anything,so I hope you can help. Thank You, Marty

ANSWER: Hello Martin:

>>You Adjusted the Brake Rod, Not the Brake Actuator.
>>Return the Brake Rod to it's Original Position.
>>The Following is a General Instruction File I Made for this Problem. Readjust the Brake Rod/s to the Original Positions. Now to Adjust the Brake Pads. Tighten the Center Adjusting Nut Until SNUG. Loosen the Adjuster Nut 1/8 Turn and Try the Brakes. If Braking is Not to your Satisfaction, then Adjust the Center Adjusting Nut on the Disc Brake Assembly Slightly (1/64" at a time or by Slightly Bumping the Adjuster Nut) Until the Proper Braking is Achieved.

Then Enter the Model Number in the Window Provided. Now Download and View the Breakdown of your Unit.
>>On the Transaxle is an OEM Identification Plate. Send me the Information Off of This Plate, Please. With this Information, I can Locate the Proper Manuals and Better Assist You.

QUESTION: John, I had adjusted the brake according to my manual and it said nothing about the how to adjust the brake pads. If the manual was correct, then I wouldn't have had a problem. They need a amend their manual or its a ploy to get people to go to the repair shop...lol. My brakes work fine and I was able to start it. The washer at the end of the spring #26 had  split and it wouldn't push the brake. It must have been the wrong washer for it to mush and deform. It felt flexable and was all worbled out. So, I replaced the washer and made the adjustment. I found the Peerless # MST 206545C and Tecumseh DOM 2119B-0327. Thank you for your help. If there is a way to post the right way to adjust the brake to the web, it might others that are going by the manual. The same to you and yours. Fly your flag for freedom, Marty

ANSWER: Hello Again Marty:

>>Thanks for the Follow up.
>>You are Correct about the Manuals.
>>When you Adjust the Brakes like the Manual Says, Usually the Safety Switch cannot Activate so the Unit will Start.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Transaxle at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select Click Here For The Parts Menu. Now Select P. QUESTION: John, What will viewing the Trans site tell me about the gnawing sound? I still have it. If its a normal sound for the age of the machine that's fine. I'm trying to stay ahead before something tears up.Thanks, and I do appreciate your help, Marty

Answer
Hi Marty:

>>My Bad. I Simply Forgot about the Gnawing/Grinding Noise you Mentioned in the Original Question.
>>The Breakdowns I Sent you to can be Downloaded and Saved for Your  Future Reference.
>>Check the Idler Pulley (#47 in the Mower parts Breakdown pg 6 of 23) is Not causing the Gnawing/Grinding Noise.
>>If the Idler Bearing is Good, then
>>Add 1/2 Qt of 80W90 Gear Oil (Rear End Oil for Automobiles is the Same) to the Rear End.
>>If the Oil Overfills the Transaxle, then No Worries. It just means that there is an Internal Problem with this Transaxle and Too Much Oil is Not going to Hurt.
>>If it Doesn't Overfill the Transaxle, then
>>Operate the Unit and Observe Any Changes in the Transaxle.
>>If the Gnawing/Grinding is Still Present, then
>>The Transaxle will Require Disassembling and Inspection and Repair or it can be Operated Until it Stops Completely and then Purchase a New or Sometimes a Good Used One to Replace it.
>>If a Bushing Wears out it will Cause 1 or More Associated Parts to Wear Quicker.
>>If you have the Time and Understand the Breakdown, you should find the Expense of making Most Repairs yourself Cost Effective.
>>I and the Other Experts here at All Experts can Assist you with Any Questions that Might Arise.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I Hope to be Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.
