Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs & Stratton 6.5 hp Intek Generator Engine, briggs stratton, engine repair manuals

Question
My 3500 watt B&S generator has been starting/running fine (although it does sometimes backfire loudly when I switch it off). However, I went to start the generator last night (powers lights in stables) but the pull cord was extremely stiff in parts of the engine rotational cycle (I even pulled the generator to one side!).
I removed the spark plug and tried pulling the start cord and the engine turned over smoothly. I also checked the magneto to flywheel gap and then tried to start it again. The engine fired first time but then started hunting and would not get up to full speed. I tried to start it again and the pull cord was again extremely stiff. task abandoned as it was now late. Any suggestions as to what might be wrong?

If you give me the model # and serial # of the engine I can help you. We also sell B & S Engine repair manuals on our web site.

It is possible that you sheared the flywheel key
and the ignition timeing is out. You must remove
the cover and flywheel and check and renew key.
