Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): electric motor on box fan, sealed bearings, box fans

Question
Hi,
I hope you can help. I was trying to clean some old 20 inch box fans we put in our windows at night when it gets hot. Not too often here in the Pacific Northwest. These are cheap box fans bought at home depot or similar store 15 years ago. They have electric 2 amp motors that are sealed bearing and do not need oiling. I was a "dummy" and used WD40 to clean away the built up grime and sludge. I think it penetrated the seals on the bearings and now the motors are running hot. How hot? After 1/2 hour of running you can touch them, but they are hot, more than warm.

Is this dangerous? Is there anything that can be done to re-lube the bearings? Are they toast and it is time to get new ones? I like these units because they put out more air and are quieter than new models that are similar size. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Answer
There is little you can do to lube the sealed bearings.  You can always replace the bearings but the bearings will probably cost more than a new fan these days.

There are a lots of companies that sell bearings online these days and many provide dimensions so you know you are ordering the correct replacement.

Another option is to look up your local electric motor repair shop and see if they have bearings on hand and their cost.

Let me know if this helps.
