Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kawasaki liquid cooled engine, gasket intake, fuel compression

Question
I have a JD F725 with a Kawsaskai liquid cooled engine. Will run like a top for several hours one day & the next day conintually stalls out & I can barely get it back in the shed. Had a mechanic replace carbeurator kit, new float, new in-line fuel filter, new fuel lines, new plugs. It still won't run. Very unpredictable. Do you think it needs a new fuel pump? Approx. 900 hrs. on engine.

Answer
Fuel pumps usually work or don't work.  Does the engine surge when it acts up?  It could be a leaky gasket, intake or may be even a head gasket.  However, leaky gaskets are very, very rare...last one I recall was about 12 years ago...took me for ever to find it.

The next time is starts acting up, remove the air filter and see if the engine performace improves.  If there is no difference, cup your hand over the carb intake reducing the amount of air entering the carb and see if engine performance improves.

Challenging problem but you need to rule out which systems, fuel, compression, ignition, are working and which one may be causing the problem.

Has the valve breather ever been cleaned?  Has the mechanic ever checked for a vacuum leak?
