Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman weed-whacker mod. 358791050, clutch tool, flat chisel

Question
QUESTION: I'm trying to access the pully start mechanism, to replace the rope which broke, in this unit but don't know how to remove the flywheel to get into the plastic housing where it lives. Tried partsdirect, Sears helpline etc., no help. No user service manual available. This is the convertible model which I have all the accessories for and have enjoyed good service from till now.

ANSWER: Hello Bob:

>>Sorry for the Delay. My PC Crashed and it Took a while to get it Up and Going again.
>>On Some Models the Clutch Drum has a Small Torx Screw in the Center Drive Hole that Holds the Drum to the Clutch Assembly. Remove the Torx Screw and the Drum Pulls Off and the Clutch Assembly can then be Removed. **To Hold the Crankshaft for Removal of the Clutch; Purchase a Bolt that is 3" to 4" Long and has the Same Diameter and Threads as the Spark Plug. Carefully Insert the Bolt Into the Engine Until it Contacts the Piston. If the Bolt is too Short, then Slowly Turn the Engine in the Same Direction you are Going to be Turning the Clutch Until the Piston Contacts the Bolt. Now to Remove the Clutch. If you do Not have the Clutch Tool for an Impact Wrench and are Doing this By Hand (no air compressor and/or not the correct socket), then Use a 2" Wide, Flat Chisel and a Shop Hammer or a 22oz Hammer and Hit the Outer Part of the Thick Ear in the Same Direction that the Engine Turns During Operation.**

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: John, thanks for your time. Follow-up questions - Any idea what size torx? C-clockwise to loosen? Flat chisel= cold-chisel? Lastly, if I use a chisel to loosen the clutch, how do I re-fasten it? Seems to me, engineering-wise, like Craftsman would really rather we didn't have access. All this just to replace a busted rope. Anyway, thanks for your help. I'll let you know.

Answer
Hello Again Bob:

>>It's a #15 Torx if I'm Not Mistaken.
>>The Clutch is Hand Tightened.
>>The Engine Rotation will cause the Clutch to Self Tighten to the Shaft as Needed.
>>It is a Pain just to Replace a Rope I Know, but it's All About Money these Days.
