Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 1999 Murray tractor mower, switch connectors, tractor mower

Question
Dear Eric,  My mower, model 46577X6A, 17.5 HP, quit running while mowing.  It was like the kill switch went off.  After it cooled down it started and ran fine.  I mowed again and it ran for about 30 minutes before it quit again.  The next time it ran about 5 minutes.  The piece that the starter connects to was hot, and the connect was a bit loose.  I feel it is a bad kill switch malfunction, but which one, or could it be something else.  I'm sure I am not alone with this problem.  Thanks R

Answer
You can find the wiring diagram at this link:

I would start by dis-connecting each safety switch and re-connecting; sometimes just cleaning the switch connection will solve the problem.  I would replace the spark plug as well.

You can also check each switch with a multimeter.  The switches are basic open/close switches, like a light switch.  NO stands for "normally open", or no continunity.  NC stands for "normally closed", or continunity.  You can check each switch to verify it's operation.

Let me know if the new plug and re-seating the safety switch connectors helps.
