Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Lawnmower discharges battery, craftsman riding mower, ac volts

Question
I have an older craftsman riding mower with a 16 hp Kohler engine. It was running fine, my wife said it just died.  it starts with the battery charger but when running the gage shows a discharge and the it runs for awhile (5-10 min)then dies. Not sure how to troubleshoot the charging system on this.. Model #cv16s, serial #  Thanks Jay

Answer
Hello Jay:

>>From your Description it Sounds like the Stator/Charging Coils or the Voltage Regulator (if Applicable) may be Bad and Require Replacing.
>>For Testing and Identifying the Electrical (Charging) System on Mowers you can Use this Site Addy; http://engines.myfaqcenter.com/Answer.aspx?p_faqid=3438 and Use the Link for AC Volts/DC Amps Meter Setting Chart. This is for Briggs Engines and Works Well for Kohler, Kawasaki, Tecumseh and Other Engine OEMs.
>>You can View a Breakdown of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.kohlerplus.com/login.asp (IE5 or Higher Required) and Select Enter as Guest. Now Select the Thumbnail of the Engine Catalog you Wish to View.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I Hope to be Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
