Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Riding Lawnmower Clutch Adjust, craftsman lawn tractor, speed transaxle

Question
QUESTION: Craftsman Lawn Tractor LT2000 model 917.273752 six speed transaxle
When engaging the clutch, the mower jolts and sometimes (when in faster gear) the front wheels pop off the ground.  Can the clutch be adjusted so that the gear engagement is more gradual/smoother or is this something that can't be changed?

Much Thanks,

Chuck

ANSWER: This is an adjustment that should be let to an experienced tech as there can be damage to the clutch if not set-up right (expensive fix)
Make sure to throttle the engine down before shifting, it is hard on the transmission to shift at high engine rpm.
Let me know what you find out.

QUESTION: Since throttling down before shifting seems to help it shift a bit smoother, should it still be taken in for clutch adjustment due to possible transaxle damange (or is this how this type of transmission shifts)?  How much approx. labor time/parts is needed for a clutch adjustment?  This is a 5+ year old mower with only 20 hours on it (it has been stored for 4.5 years)and I want to get many years of use out of it (buying it from my brother).  Much thanks for the response.....Chuck

Answer
I would not expect more than a couple of hours for the adjustment, Our shop charged 72.00 per hour.
Make sure that it is a reputable dealer and not one that will try and sell you a bunch of unneeded repairs.
Let me know how it turns out or if thre is anything else I can do.
