Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): craftsman mower fails to pull on incline, control linkages, drive belts

Question
Ben
I have a Craftsman riding mower, model number  917273280. It has the hydro transmission "Hydro Gear, 336-0510". It is a DYT 4000. I recently developed a problem with loss of pulling on inclines. The engine is running fine but its like the transmission slips or something. Mowing on level or uneven surfaces is still goog. The mower still has good forward speed as well as reverse. I replaced the drive belt thinking this might be the problem but after doing so, its still the same. I have the belt routed as the manual describes. The belt is the correct one. I have also serviced the transmission with the proper oil as amount. The transmission has been a little loud. Today I dropped the deck and checked the belt again. I noticed its somewhat loose with the clutch engauged, even looser when I apply the brake/clutch. I can move the belt back and forth several inches with the clutch enguaged and even pull it around the pulls with ease. I an wondering if I might have an issue with the clutch idler, but I dont know if all this sounds normal or not. The mower have 295 hours on it. Any help will be much appreciated!

In many cases problems with the 336-0510 are
not related to a defective transaxle, but are
caused by slipping drive belts, partially
engaged bypass valves, and loose or
damaged control linkages. Be sure to perform
all operational checks and adjustments before
assuming the unit is malfunctioning.

1.   Engine speed low
2.   Control linkage bent or out of adjustment
3.   Brake setting incorrect
4.   Drive belt slipping or pulley damaged
5.   Oil level low or contaminated oil
6.   Excessive loading
7.   Bypass assembly sticking
8.   Air trapped in hydraulic system

1.   Adjust to correct setting
2.   Repair or replace linkage
3.   Adjust brake to proper setting
4.   Repair or replace drive belt or pulley
5.   Fill to proper level or change oil
6.   Reduce vehicle loading
7.   Repair or replace valve or linkage
8.   Purge hydraulic system
