Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Replacement of Starter Group (490421) for Craftsman Lawn Tractor, craftsman lawn tractor, craftsman model

Question
I have a Craftsman Model 917.254860 lawn tractor. I need to replace the Starter Drive Group (490421) but cannot determine how to remove the group from the tractor assembly. Can you advise me on removing the assembly to install a new assembly? The Gear part (280104) is plastic and has worn off completely after 18 years. The Owners Manual does not show how to remove, only the part assembly is shown in a picture.
Can the Pinion Spring Kit be removed from the top of the assembly and if so, how?
I would appreciate your help with this one.

Answer
Hello John:

>>Some of the Starters Drives had a Spring/Roll Pin that you had to Drive Out and then Remove the Starter Group Assembly.
>>The Other Style you have to Push on the Cap and Remove the C/E Clip. I have Seen Both C and E Clips which According to Briggs and Tecumseh are Supposed to be C Clips.
>>The Breakdowns can Assist you in making Sure you Assemble the Starter Drive Group Correctly.
>>Make Sure the Plastic Gear is Installed so the Beveled Side is Engaging with the Flywheel (Faces the C/E Clip or Spring/Roll Pin.
>>Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Unit, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I Hope to be Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
