Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Engine Damage, anchor bolt, js63c

Question
A 2004 John Deer push mower model JS63C is in my shop for repair.
The blade was spinning freely on a very loose anchor bolt. Then I find the key is missing from the shaft. Yet the blade has no indication of damage from striking an object.
I put in a 1/4"x1" key, add a lockwasher and tighten the blade up.
When the Briggs 6.5 engine is started it knocks sharply.
The owner reassures me that there are no roots or bricks in his yard. What do I focus my search on to find the knock?

Thanks
George

Answer
Hello George:

>>Did you Check the Blade Adapter for Wear Inside the Key Way?
>>I have seen this Occur a Few Times. It is Rare, but it Does Happen.
>>From your Description it Sounds like you have a Shop of your Own, so
>>you Know as Well as I that there are Only so many Other Places for a Sharp Noise to Occur on these Small Engines.
>>Is the Armature/Coil still Set to the Correct Clearance? I had 1 that the Coil Loosened and was Striking the Flywheel. It Sounded like a Bad Connecting Rod. If the Coil Loosened then the Flywheel Striking the Coil could have Sheared the Blade Adapter Key and the Coil is still Striking the Flywheel causing the Knocking.
>>That, a Loose Blade and the Connecting Rod are the Only Components I can Think of at the Moment that give a Sharp Knock to the Engine.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers JS63C and Click Find. Then Select your Model from the Search Results Area. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. *You can Drag the View Windows for Better Viewing.*
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I Hope to be Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Hello Again George:

I Happened to Think about the Readers that are Not Mechanics and wanted to Include the Fact that if the Flywheel Key is Slightly Damaged, the Engine can Run, but will have a Knock.
>>Thanks for Using All Experts.
