Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman 80W90 transaxle gear oil, speed transaxle, question pool

Question
Hello Robert, thank-you in advance for your time,....as shown in the subject line - this isn't and engine question, but hopefully your experience can offer up the answer. I just purchased a super clean 2004 Crafstman Riding Mower....Model NO:917.273810....it has a belt driven 6 speed transaxle,....the mower is working perfectly,...and has really been maintained well by the previous owner,....however in looking through the owners manual, I see where the transaxle comes equipped with 80W90 gear oil....I don't see anywhere in the manual where it talks about ever servicing the gear oil, replacing it, etc....I guess, with these tractors operating at relatively low speeds, etc...maybe it's never required,....but I'm an advocate of changing fuids, filters, etc...regularly,...and with a little 80w90 gear oil being way cheaper than a future transaxle problem,...I wanted to investigate into getting the oil replaced....the manual just says 80w90, no reference to GL4 GL5, anything like that,...no reference to the capacity,....the part # in the manual for the oil is 730229A...I see in the assy breakdown for the transaxle, the oil fill plug, on the top of the transaxle,....it would be neat if I could just use a small tube and siphon out the old oil, and replace,...unless theres a better way to drain,....can you help, on this matter,...how best to do it, how much oil, etc....thank-you very much..
