Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs timing marks, crank shaft, cam shaft

Question
I have a B/S 461707 type 0145-E3.  There are timing marks on the cam shaft and one on the crank shaft timing gear.  Can you tell me how to align them please.  Thanks!

Answer
hi donald    almost sounds like quite a rebuild job  ?

please find  web site for ipls and info

http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/manual_and_more/docsearch.aspx?eng...

engine is opposed twin ,

if the cyl heads are off , and valves are out , turn the  engine  so  c/case opening is up
then fit cam shaft followers back to where they came from ( as hopefully you marked )
rotate the crank shaft until you see the timming dot on the crank pinion  then
install the camshaft  to its journal support in the case making sure to align the dot on the cam gear with dot on the crankshaft pinion  each dot should align perfectly  .  .

dont forget the  oil slinger on the end of camshaft

make sure you torque the con rod bolts / nuts up to correct torque
before going further rotate engine  untill you that the marks realign again it might ake 3 or 4 turns of crank but worth the time to know if timming is good  if so
fit new c/case gasket  and semi loosely  refit c/case cover /footing  bolts

turn engine over so can see the number 1 cyl  ( number 1 is the cylinder closest to the flywheel side )  physically watch  number 1 cylinder inlet valve follower  open fully,  the close fully .  ( you will have to push down on inlet follower  with a small screw driver  to keep,it in contact with cam ) and tdc the piston .  this then means that number 1 cyl is on tdc  compression stroke  make sure you the you  refit inlet & exhaust valves and check for their correct clearance for in / ex   and check  for correct seat / face contact and then refit springs ands retainers

then repeat for  number 2 cylinder ( the other cyl )  just watch inlet open then close and tdc number 2 piston  and check correct clearance and contact   for in / ex  fit springs and retainders .    refit cyl heads with new gaskets and torque down to correct torques

be sure to torque down flywheel and tighten down fully  c/case / footing bolts

always use new gaskets and o rings for assembly ,
adjust governor  finish up assy

refit - breathers manifolds ,carbs - cyl head ducts  ,  flywheel covers  etc  - mufflers
 oil up    sae  30  briggs

cheers   let me know if need  torque settings for
con rods , cyl heads,  flywheel  etc    i hane service manual at work

cheers paul
