Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): mower blades, kawasaki motor, gauge wire

Question
I have a older Comm. john deere 48" walk behind mower with 14hp kawasaki motor pull start. FC420V-AS11   FC420VA09765. if the mower has been sitting for a couple of days the mower blades will turn on. soon as you cut the blades off they will not come back on have to wait awhile or a day. The guy at the mower shop replaced key switch, coil, pto switch, and a relay. It sat for a couple of yrs and it wouldn't start and the mower blades didn't work he did all that and it started up and the blades worked, I took it home it started right up the blades came on i cut the blades off and they wouldn't come back on, the next day they came on but once you cut them off they won't come back on in awhile. I took it back to him he checked everything and everything checked good but he can't figure out why this is happening. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but when we unplug the relay from the connector with the diodes and plug it back in it cuts the mower off but will start back up, But the main problem is mower blades. Thanks for any help, trying to help the guy out i really need my mower.

Answer
Hello Michael:

>>Sorry for the Delay, but I had a Family Emergency come up and it kept me away all day. I am Usually able to Answer Questions within 12 to 18 Hours.
>>Run a Ground Wire (6 or 8 Gauge wire) from the Engine to the Frame to make sure the Engine is Grounding Good to the Frame. This also Grounds the PTO.
>>The Following is a PTO Test File I made. Any Input is Appreciated. **If you have an Ohmmeter, Disconnect the Wiring Harness from the Front of the Clutch and Check the Resistance of the Clutch. You should have around 4 or 5 OHMs. If at or near Zero, the Coil has Shorted.**
>>Check the PTO Clearance.
>>The Following is a Basic File I made for Setting the PTO Clearance. Any Input is Appreciated. **Some of the Newer PTOs cannot be Adjusted.
>>If you can Get a Blade Style Feeler Gauge between the PTO Magnet and Clutch, then Set the Clearance at .015in. The Newer PTOs have the Same Set Up as the Older PTOs, except there is No Adjustments.
>>I Suggest also that you Rig a 12 Volt Light for Testing the Current Flow to the PTO while Operating the Mower. If the Light Blinks During Operation, then you have a Bad Connection somewhere to the PTO Clutch.
>>If the Light Stays Steady and the PTO Still Kicks in and Out, then it is the Adjustment.
>>You can Also Try Turning the Spring Loaded Adjuster Nuts 1/4 Turn and Operate the Mower. Do Not Adjust Over 1/2 Turn.
>>If you have Adjusted to 1/2 Turn and the Problem is Still Present and you Know the Voltage to the PTO is Steady, then Replace the PTO.**
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
