Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): craftsman mower, friction disc, wheel assemblies

Question
I have a craftsman 6.75 horsepower 21" cut power-propelled mower. The model # is 917.370721. When I'm using the mower and I go to pull it backwards, the rear wheels lock and the mower is unable to go backwards. Any idea what it is?

Answer
Hello Craig:

>>From your Description it Sounds like the Wheel Assemblies Require Cleaning.
>>To View a Breakdown of this Unit Go to this Site Addy, http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action?sid=PSHx20080114x00001 and Enter the Model Numbers 917.370721 and Click Search. From this Page you can View Diagrams and Parts List.
>>Select the Drive Control/Gear Case/Wheel Diagram for a Close Up View of the Wheel Assemblies.
>>When Dirt and Dust Build up in the Wheel Assemblies, the Friction Disc (#36), the Pawl (#31) and the Other Small Components make up the Pinion.
>>Clean and Lightly Lubricating the Pinions should Correct this Problem as long as the Transmission is Not Damaged.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
