Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Replace the ignition switch, engine model type, riding lawn mower

Question
QUESTION: Hi,

I have a 7 year old Murray(425600X8A) riding lawn mower.  When I start the mower I am unable to turn it off.  Do you think this could be a problem with the ignition switch or could this be something else?  Is there a website that will show me how to replace the ignition switch.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

ANSWER: This link contains links to wiring diagrams:

What is the engine model, type and code number?  If you look at the engine wiring you will find a couple of wires coming from the starter area.  These are the alternator wires.  Usually, on the other side of the engine you will find another wire or two.  One wire may run to the carb.  The other wire is the shut-off wire and is usually a female spade connector.  This connection is usually mounted near the throttle cable assembly.  Make sure the wire is connected.

Send me the engine info so I can look up your engine.

Answer
Follow the throttle cable to the engine block.  You will find the throttle plate.  There should be one wire behind the throttle plate and a spade terminal on the outside.  This is the engine shut-off wire.  Is it connected?

The wire runs from the ignition coil to the throttle plate post connector.  The other wire should go to the ignition switch.

If you have an multimeter/continunity tester you can test the circuit.  You should have zero ohms between ground and the terminal when the key is off.  The circuit should be open when in the key is in the run position.

Let me know if this helps.
