Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): hi, briggs and stratton, amp alternator

Question
hi my 17.5 briggs and Stratton engine blew and my camshaft is missin 2 teeth on the gear and I was wondering if that is ganna be a problem when I get it runnin again

Answer
hi

yes if there is 2 teeth missing off the pinion or cam shaft gear  it will get out of time and valves will not open and close @ correct times and directly cause running, starting and power problems

when you say  your engine blew in what circumstances did this egine blow and can you see what damage there is

ie  broken con rod,  damaged piston, valves, camshafts, pinions, oil pumps  etc    big end
bore damage  etc

was engine using oil  and or blowing smoke when it blew , did it over rev or run out of oil  ?

all has an impact on wether a engine is worth rebuild or not

please let me know  and give me model and type number from engine

but i suspect  ohv , vangaurd electric start , with full pressure lubrication and mechanical governor with 10 amp alternator with regulator/ rectifier

cost for rebuild parts given damage may not make it a viable option  but wont know  till you assess wear, damage and service limits

cheers paul
