Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): New Engine(mod#66015) on Wood Splitter, hp gas engine, engine crankshaft

Question
QUESTION: Hello Eric,

We just put a new greyhound 6.5 hp gas engine on an old wood splitter. Everything appears to be put together right, it gets gas and fire, but still will not start! Any sugesstions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

ANSWER: How did you check for spark?  If you dis-connect the wood splitter pump from the engine crankshaft will the engine start?

Is the fuel valve turned on?  Is the gas more than 30 days old?  Does the engine feel like it has compression?

I've had brand new engines with faulty spark plugs...did you try a new spark plug?

QUESTION: We took the plug out and put against the bloc and it was firing. The fuel valve is on, and the gas is new. It has compression. We have tried everything that would be typical and are @ a loss! Thanks so much for your input!

Answer
Will it try to start if you squirt a little gas directly into the spark plug hole or carburetor?

If it does not start with a new plug and squirting gas into the spark plug hole it could be a timing issue, a sheared flywheel key but this is not very common on horizontal shaft engines.

If warranty is not an issue you can remove the valve cover and see if both valves are moving.
