Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Fuel line routing for craftsman weedwhacker, weed whackers, gas tank

Question
QUESTION: Hello John,  I've found a couple different suggestions online for fuel line routing on a 1995 craftsman 21cc weedwhacker, and i'm wondering what the basic theory is?  Does the line with the filter go from the gas tank directly to the primer bulb, and then out the primer bulb into the carb, and then out the carb back into the gas tank?  I did it this way, and i can see gas squirt into the carb when i pump the bulb, but  it runs for a few seconds and then stops.   Others seem to say the line with the filter goes directly to the carb, then out the carb to the primer bulb, then out the bulb back to the tank.  So... is a primer bulb designed to suck gas outta the tank and push it into the carb, or is it designed to somehow suck the gas through the carb?   First way seems more logical.  Also, i've read the filter attaches to the skinny tube, but it doesn't seem to fit, the big tube on this model seems to fit much much better... does it make a difference?
Thanks,
Dan

ANSWER: Hello Dan:

>>I have seen many of these Weed Whackers and I have 1 in the Shop.
>>The Primer Bulbs can Function Both Ways. 1- Draw Gas from the Tank and Push the gas to the Filter and then the Carburetor or 2- Draw gas through the Filter and the Carburetor.
>>Usually the Filter is Between the Primer Bulb and the Carburetor and it Pulls the gas from the Tank and Pushes it through the Filter and Carburetor.
>>If the Primer is Pushing gas into the Carburetor Throat, but the Engine Starts and Quits, then the Carburetor Metering Pump Needle may be Stuck.
I Require the OEM (Walbro, Zama, ect) and the Model Numbers Off the Carburetor. With these I can Locate a Breakdown of the Carburetor and Better Assist you.

QUESTION: Thanks for the reply John!

Well, it is definitely an "in the tank" filter, and the carb is an Walbro.  The model# on the whacker is 021UB24RA:EM.   I'll try to take it apart again and clean the carb.  If that doesn't help i'll try routing the filter line directly to the carb instead of the primber bulb.... hopefully something works.

One more question: i have 2 sizes of fuel line, thick & thin.
Which one generally routes back to the tank?

Thanks,
Dan

Answer
Hello Again Dan:

>>I Misspoke when I said Filter. The Filter is in the Tank and there is another Filter/Screen in the Carburetor.
>>The Primer Pulls through the Tank Filter and Pushes through the Carburetor Filter/Screen and Carburetor back to the Tank.
>>The Small Line is from the Tank to the Primer to the Carburetor. The Larger Line is from the Carburetor to the Tank.
