Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): shifter in lawnmower, clucth, murray mower

Question
QUESTION: I HAVE A 16.5 HP MURRAY MOWER THAT WAS GIVEN TO ME THE PROBLEM TO FIX WAS THE SHIFT ROD ASSEMBLY .WHICH I PUT A NEW ONE IN AND ALL THE GEARS SWITCH NOW .THE PROBLEM I'M HAVING IS SOMETIMES YOU CAN GET IT TO GO STRAIGHT INTO A GEAR SOMETIMES IT WILL RIGHT OFF BUT SOMETIMES IT TAKES A COUPLE OF TRYS .DO YOU THINK THE BELT IS BAD OR THE SHIFTER HAS A PROBLEM?

ANSWER: There could be many different issues going on here. Recheck your lever installation and make sure everything is moving freely. As long as the belt begins to turn the trans, it should go into gear.
If these issues are OK, Then i would say you have an internal trans issue. I have seen the grease get very hard inside these transmissions, causing hard to shift, and hard to turn issues.

QUESTION: I HAVE RECHECKED BOTH OF THE ABOVE AND I PUT NEW GREASE IN IT.HOW LOOSE OR HOW EASY SHOULD IT BE TO PUT IN AND OUT ON THE BELT?

ANSWER: shifting should be fairly easy if everything is working correctly.
It sounds like there may be an internal issue in the trans.

QUESTION: the trans looks good could it be the belt?

Answer
If the belt is turning the trans, then thats not the case. If you find it hard to get in gear, allow the betl clucth to come up a little and spin the trans to allow it to go into gear.
These transmissions are straight gear types, which involves movement sometimes to gear it into gear.
