Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Chainsaw, craftsman chainsaw, clutch band

Question
The chain will not move on the saw.  I took the chain and bar off and the clutch is hard to spin.  I took the cover off that and still hard to spin.  Also, having a problem putting clutch cover back on.

Answer
check bar groove is clean, clear, also the bar tip is free not damaged?

is the chain correct pitch and gauge for bar ie .325-050  this is usually stamped onto bar along with number of drive links.

Does the chain move when you are trying to start the saw ?  If  so i would suspect either the clutch band spring is broken or the shoes and or the drum bearing has partially or fully siezed onto the drum or crankshaft.   Either way the drum should turn freely and clutch should turn with the crank when you pull engine over - it is possible that the drum bearing surface may be damaged as well

if so please check that the bar oiling system is working and putting out good quantity of oil

as to not being able to fit clutch cover back on  make sure the chain brake is off   and the band is going over the drum  and nothing is hanging it up

hope this helps    cheers  paul
