Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda EM2200X Generator, cotter pin, honda engine

Question
QUESTION: Hi Paul I may have E-mailed you twice in error before(sorry)I wanted to ad that when I cleaned the Generator I also took off the Governor Arm to clean it.This may be where my problem is of all of a sudden this thing wanting to run "Fast" with the choke in the open position.Like I mentioned it starts right up with the choke closed & when I move the choke to the open position it just wants to run FAST!Thanks!Steve.

ANSWER: hi steve

sounds like when you took off the governor arm to clean it ,and the governor is not slowing engine down or has hung up, you may need to reset the governor and check for binding etc
resetting  puts the governor arm and spool and cup in the correct position and removes any play from the system,  hope you didn't reposition any springs or adjust top no load speed or idle  in any way ?  from memory  speed should be 3600 rpm  60hz  frequency

please can you give me honda engine number stamped onto engine and i will find governor adjustment proceedure for you

cheers paul

QUESTION: Hey Paul thanks for the info.I was thinking of course after I took off the Governor Arm that it might be the problem. The Engine number on the front is GX140-2652376.The one on top in the middle is GX140-144cm3.I also noticed that on the Governor shaft is what looks to be almost like a clip/cotter Pin.Now the only thing I can see that this is doing(Because you can slide it up & down on the shaft)there are no notches for it to go into etc.Maybe it keeps the Governor Arm from bottoming out??There is no bind in the shaft at all,I can turn it "Clockwise" & "Counterclockwise" until it stops in both directions. Also I can fire it up on 1 pull with no issues at all until you try to "Open" the choke & it just wants to zing to the Moon!!!Thanks Again!!

ANSWER: to adjust governor -  you may need to remove 1 rail  to get tank to move,, remove 1 bolt on carb side of tank and 2 on the other side of tank  try and swing tank out of the way to gain access to governor arm and shaft link assy , leave the throttle control lever in stop / idle poistion
once there - grasp the link from gonvernor arm to carb and move the link from fully closed to full open throttle  - while doing this note which way the governor arm moved  ie clockwise or counter clockwise in this case it should be clockwise  (from full closed to full open)
now that you know which direction to turn shaft  loosen the clamp nut on the governor shaft   and hold the throttle at full open ( do not force )then turn the governor shaft clockwise ( direction noted above) and tighten clamp nut -   reasseble and retest

note the governor will not have to move far at all    its travel is quite small

make sure the link spring is on the rod and tension is kept on the link rod and also check that the throttle plate screw has not come loose and jamming

hope this helps

cheers paul

QUESTION: Paul when I go to check it out the way you described...after the Governor Arm & all is hooked back up should Carb still be in W.O.T. even before I go to fire it back up?I noticed with what I have tried so far the Carb is @ W.O.T. just sitting there so after its fired & still in the closed choke position it does not move when I go to "Open" the choke. Also I took a closer look @ the Governor Shaft & there is a notch for the clip to pop in to.So there is very little movement for the shaft to turn in Clock or Counter. Thanks Again!Steve.

Answer
is the engine running ok now  y / n  ?

while engine is not running the governor closing force will decrease and the throttle plate will
go back to wide open full throttle as engine coasts to a stop ,  but when engine is running closing force applied by governor cup and spool on the lever paddle will increase as revs rise  but the governor spring will apply throttle opening force to balance the governor closing  force
this known as the governed speed   or the speed at which closing and opening forces  balance one another according to speed  and load

steve  when engine is running can you see the governor working  ie moving  back and forth
or does it just stay at full throttle  - when you have the choke open

steve if you grab the governor link and manually move it toward fully closed does the engine slow down ?
