Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Adding primer bulb, john deere 185, fuel tank cap

Question
I own a John Deere 185 mower. this is a 17 HP engine which is hard to start after setting for some time. It has to pull gas from the tank (long ways)as all drains or evaporates from line. I would like to add an in line bulb primer or electric boost pump. Once it starts it runs great. Need detailed instructions as to how to accomplish this. Such as placing before fuel pump or after? Is there any problem with doing this? I had read where it was done and solved the problem for someone else. Thanks  Don

Answer
In my opinion, putting a primer bulb would not help your issue. The first thing I would would replace in this issue is the fuel tank cap. It may not let the tank vent correctly, and cause a slight vacuum to pull the fuel back into the tank when you shut it down.
