Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Low Power, honda gx200, head gasket

Question
Hi Howard,

I have a Honda GX200 6.5 HP motor that has less than 60 minutes on it.  The motor is mounted on a go-kart that my son and I built.  The motor just doesn't seem to provide any power.  When at full throttle, the RPMs seem very low and the cart will barely move without a push.

Brand new motor, fresh gas.  Before I take it over to the Honda dealer for warranty service, any thoughts?

Perhaps the governor is not adjusted properly?

Answer
Hi Dick,

If the engine is lacking power then one of the following must be happening.

1)  The air intake may be obstructed.

2)  Lack of lubrication or incorrect lubrication.

3)  Carburetor is improperly set.

4)  Exhaust is obstructed.

5)  Improper valve lash.

6)  Loss of compression (worn rings - blown head gasket).

That is the list that you can reference.  Not sure why a NEW engine would be having difficulties but.

Regards,

Howard
