18.5 HP on a craftsman..i was mowing and bagging leaves with it. stopped to empty bagger. when i turned off the Key i didnt get it turned clear off and it sounded a little funny till i clicked it clear off.  it took about 3 mins to empty and bag the leaves and when i tried to restart it it wouldnt.. turns over fine. i put in more gas and a new spark plug.. still no start.. i sprayed some starting fluid in it and it still wont fire.. nost sure what happened... thanks. roy in columbia sc

Something, a safety switch, is preventing spark.  Have you checked for spark?

You can trace each wire, from the igntion switch, to each safety switch.  Try dis-connecting each switch and re-connecting it to clean the contact.  I'd also dis-connect the ignition switch connector and re-connect it.

If you still do not have spark after checking the safety switch connections then you can remove the enigne shroud housing, the top engine cover, to access the ignition coil.  Dis-connect the small wire connected to the coil.  Check for spark.  If you have spark with the small wire dis-connected from the coil then the coil is working properly and you know you have a safety circuit problem.
