Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler Valve Stem Removal, valve retainers, spring retainer

I have a 1989 Kohler MV16S Type 56511 that has NO clearance between the valve stems and the tappets.I wish to grind the bottom of the valve stem to bring it to spec. I am at the point where the first spring is compressed, and the retainer is raised, but the keeper appears to be a round steel ring that is pressed onto the stem. I do not know how to remove it properly, and there are no instuctions for re installing it in the service manual.  Can you help?

The valve retainers, pictured in the parts list, should be a two piece split design.  With the valve spring retainer and spring compressed, you should be able to use a small screwdriver or denatl style pick to remove the retainer.  Probe/pick around on the retainer to see if it seperates into two pieces.
