Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Murray 30 Rider, switch harness, intermittent problems

Question
Murray 30" rider mower: Model 309007x8b

At the beginning of this year, I thought my lawnmower had a shortage having to do with the seat sensor.  It will cut off power to the mower and I will wiggle the seat switch harness and it will start.  The same happen last week, but wiggling the wires didn't work.  So I tested the sensor and had it confirmed that the button was ok. So I proceeded to test the plug going to the button it was ok. Then i check the clutch sensor, unplug and then plug back up, wiggle it, nothing.  So I gave up, and tried about 6 hours later, the mower started.  All before it will just turn over but will not catch.  So I got on the mower, mowed about 50 yards and it shuts off. Back to turning over and not catching.  I push the mower back under the garage, tried for hour to troubleshoot then gave up.  Got up the next morning, mower starts up, I mowed the same path I mowed the day before and it stops about in the same spot.  What can be the problem?

Answer
Check your voltage on your battery.

A starter turning but not engaging could be a bad starter or simply a bad starter gear, check these things out.  your engine should have a plastic gear.

The seat switch has me scratching my head.... it generally either works or does not work.  Are your wires okay?  Perhaps have a short in them?   I would suggest you attache a "jumper" in place of the safety switch FOR TESTING PURPOSES only and try the mower.  If it works we know it was a switch with intermittent problems.

When the engine quits, check and see if you have spark by removing the spark plug.  The clue you give me here is it stops in the same spot.  You could have a bad ignition coil that when it heats up has an internal short.
