Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 2hp B&S edger repair info, surface rust, theroy

Question
I have a 2hp B&S edger that has been sitting with gas in it for a couple of years. I have cleaned out the gas tank and carb, replaced the spark plug, verified compression, but have not yet checked for spark. I removed the flywheel cover and found the flat outer surface next to the fins have some surface rust. Should this be cleaned before checking for spark and if so with what?

Answer
Rust should not have any impact on the ignition system, in theroy, and in real life it has very little actaul impact.

You need to determine if your engine has points.  Looking at the first two digits of the code number, if the digits are 80 or lower then the engine should have points unless someone converted to electrical.

You can also tell by looking at the coil.  If you see a wire or wires running underneath the flywheel then you have points.

Will the engine start if you spray starting fluid directly into the carburetor?
