Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda clones, tank design, zongshen

Question

I have bought what I call a "Honda clone"last year at Harbor Freight last year and since then have seen others that look the same (Greyhound for 1).

Is this legal as they sure look like the "Honda" I have on my pressure washer. (That is one of the reasons I bought it, in case my 'Honda" blows up.
How good is the quality of these engines?

Thanks
Dennis

Answer
Dennis,

Actually Honda refers to them as HONDA COPY engines.  It is a trade dress issue which is a violation if in fact it is an exact copy.

If you look closely you will see that the engines are starting to look different and not so much like the Hondas anymore.  Many of the companies have been proactive and have even gotten a "sign off letter from Honda" saying their engine design no longer violates and Honda Trade Dress issue.

The quality of the Greyhound is very good.  It is manufactured by a company called LIFAN in china...One of Chinas largest motorcycle suppliers.

You will notice that the air filter cover is very different then on your Honda.  You will also notice a different fuel tank design and fuel tank mount.

In speaking with the castings manufacturer they inform me that the cylinder has been slanted from 25 degrees to 27 degrees which is also a change from the Hondas.

The main engine companies in China are  LIFAN LONCIN DUCAR JIADONG, ZONGSHEN and RATO.

There have been some very strict EPA guidelines that go into effect beginning Jan 1 2010 that will weed out many engine exporters.

Hope this helps
