Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S carb and starting, feeler gauge, tank engine

Question
Hi Robert,

Thank you for your time in answering my question, so here's what I have, 4hp I/C B&S MDL 114902 Type 3150-01 code 86101024 engine.
I bought it used, carb was very dirty, cleaned it replaced tank, engine was hard starting, start stop a few times until warm. When running muffler got very red and at times had flames. replaced muffler seemed ok then but still red some. Removed carb and cleaned again let soak in cleaner a bit, replaced started ok no start and stopping, no red muffler, max speed 3300rpm reduce speed to 2750rpm and accelerated smooth, was responsive to needle adj, no coughing or sputter, when turning off had a running lean smell, slight popping, let sit for 10 min and went to restart and would not start. Is there a procedure to follow on carb cleaning and re-assembly, and test I could perform to see if carb useable, any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Wayne

Answer
Hi Wayne
As far as the carb you are on the right track. Just be sure that all jets and ports are open. Compressed air is the easiest way. Now, here is something you did not mention. Check the magneto arms and flywheel magnet for rust and/or trash buildup. This can cause a weak spark and can contribute to your problem. To re-set the magneto, .008 is a good gap. If you don't have a feeler gauge, a business card will do just fine. Hope this helps.
