Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): walbro carb., metal shavings, fuel inlet

Question
I have a 12hp B&S model 283707-0217-01 on a Snapper 281011BE I just put this engine on the mower and noticed fuel leaking from the hose connector on the carb. the connector does not unscrew from the carb., it does spin around but does not tighten. What type of fitting is this and how do I replace it?

Answer
The fitting is press fit.  You need to order Briggs part number 692317 and replace the fuel inlet.

I checked online for a manual but could not find one.  Here's what I do.  Order the new part and compare they are the same before removing.

Remove and dis-assemble carburetor.
Remove old fitting.  DO NOT TWIST or try TURNING out the old fitting!

You need to remove the white plastic part to access the metal stem.
Drill and tap threads in the old fitting.

Find a socket that is just larger than the fuel inlet stem you just threaded.  The socket should be big enough to all the stem to fit inside but not too big that the socket does not sit on the outside diameter of the carb inlet whole.

Place the bolt, with a nut and flash washer on it, through the socket and then thread the bolt into the fuel stem you just tapped.
Once tight, turn the nut with a wrench.  Difficult to explain but you are basically making a puller to remove the old stem.  As you tighten the nut it pulls out the old stem.  If the socket is the correct size the stem will ride up the inside of the socket as you tighten the nut.

Before replacing, make sure you completely dis-assemble the carb and blow out all the metal shavings.

Use a vice and press in the new fitting...make sure the fitting is in the correct position before pressing it in.

The task is easy to do...just difficult to explain.  Let me know if this helps.
