Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): small engine carb., machine screw, smooth response

Question
QUESTION: I just bought an older rebuilt Tecumseh vertical carburetor 4.0 HP/Craftsman. I want to install it on my 3.5 HP Tecumseh minibike engine but I noticed it has a smaller intake type port near the gas inlet that the original carb. doesn't have. I don't know what it's purpose is and I am wondering if it can be plugged up for my application? Tom

ANSWER: without seeing a picture of your carb, I think your referring to an external vent.

The problem your going to have with this carb if it work is in your throttle response as the other carb (if its truly a minibike engine) has an intermediate circuit in the carb.

What this intermediate circuit does is allow for smooth response when opening the throttle up from idle to fast... -Gunning it so to speak

I can not tell u for sure if its gonna work without seeing it, but i have my doubts.  Give it a try though.

Answer
Tom

That is a vent.  You can not plug it off. You can however take a piece of small fuel line about 6 or so inches long and stick it on there to allow for proper venting.  you can even put a Course threaded machine screw on the other end to keep large contaminants, mud dubbers, etc out of it.
