Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Replacement engine choices, peerless transaxle, briggs and stratton

Question
Hi David,
I have a Craftsman LT1000 riding mower model # 917.272751 18hp 42" cut. It has (or had) a Briggs and Stratton 31H777 Type 0202E1 Code 030612ZE (so it was made June 2003). Threw the connecting rod and damaged the Crankshaft, timing gear and scraped the inside of the case. Due to the cost of the replacement parts - and the fact that everything else is 6 years old, I'd like to replace the entire engine with as close a fit as I can get (I'm lazy and don't want to do anything except bolt a new one in)
The tractor has a 6 speed manual Peerless Transaxle model # 206-545C.
I use it for mowing (1/4 acre at a 15 degree slope, 2 acres flat, some rough cut fields) as well as pulling 17cu/ft of firewood/dirt/trash etc, water drum rollar, etc, and will attach a snow plow or blower this winter. I currently use wheel weights.
How much horsepower/torque can I put on this tractor and transaxle? Will the extra power help? What engines will fit directly?
Thank-you
Paul

Answer
Paul,

I am not a big supporter of changing engine suppliers on an application like this. (REMEMBER I DO PROTOTYPING for a living)  There is no direct drop in replacement.  Please remember to take into consideration the muffler, the choke and throttle control cables, the electrical hookups from tractor to engine... you see where I am going with this.

Contact your local Briggs and Stratton dealer and he can help you with a DIRECT bolt in replacement for that tractor.
