Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 17.5 B&S OHV engine, ohv engine, head gasket

Question
Here is the deal, I have put this thing back together due to it having a bad fuel solenoid. I can start it at low throttle and it will idle fine. When I advance throttle to the point where the governor arm starts to move open on the carb it starts to pop and sputter. It seems to be popping out the exhaust and the air intake to the carb. When it does this it shakes and tries to stall. The farther the throttle goes the louder and more violent the shaking becomes. Like I said it runs fine at idle with no signs of problems. The fuel is only a couple of months old and I have been using it in my other tractor. The guy I got his from said he thought the head gasket was blown but I have compression. I was going to clean the carb and change the plug just to make sure. Any ideas? Engine Model# 31c707 Type#0175e1 Code# 301103ze/ Nikki carb# 696353

Answer
Hi Daniel
The first thing I would check would be the setting on the valves. The specs are:
Intake .007-.009 Exhaust .017-.019. If that is not the problem, check the flywheel key to see if it is sheered or distorted. That could cause the timing to be off. Also you didn't say if the motor was torn down. If it was, then the timing may not have been set correctly, (timing marks on the crankshaft gear and the cam gear not lined up.) Hope this helps.
