Question
QUESTION: i have a weed eater featherlite  1500 gas blower it has been working fine for me, then today i couldnt get it to start at all.  My husband put in a new spark plug and he said it wasnt fireing. Then my son tried to start it and the cord wouldnt go back in.  What the heck is going on?   can you help me with this?? I have only had it about 3 months, i guess i could take it back to walmart that is if i can find the receipt. my email adress is jrenae48@yahoo. Thanks, Renae

ANSWER: You'll probably have to take it to a Poulan/Weedeater Authorized Service Center to have it looked at.  Sometimes WalMart will take them back, but after three months they'll usually tell you it has to go to a service center.

To tell you what's wrong with it would require a few tests and at least partial disassembly.  I wouldn't recommend this as it would probably cause you a problem with the warranty repair.  If you do decide you'd like to try, I'll need to know the exact model number from the id sticker as there are 12 variations of the 1500.  Thanks, PK.

Answer
The ignition not firing could be the coil itself or it could be the switch.  You'd need to remove the cover over the flywheel to access the coil.  Then disconnect the wire that's clipped to the coil and see if the coil will fire.  If it will, then the switch of the wire leading to it is bad.  If it won't, the coil is bad.

The starter is a bit more involved.  You'll have to disassemble the case to access it.  It may be that the spring has broken or the plastic piece that holds it has broken.  Something else may be damaged or it could just be some dirt.  Disassembly will be needed to find the exact problem.

Again I have to caution you that this sort of disassembly may cause your warranty center to disallow warranty repairs.  It's pretty easy to tell when one has been taken apart.  Thanks, PK.
