Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Ryobi String Head, ryobi string trimmers, homelite string trimmer

Question
Eric:
This is an easy one for you.
I replaced the string head on my inexpensive Homelite String Trimmer (which is very very difficult to start) with a Ryobi Reel Easy Bump Feed String Head.
When installing new string, I was able to rotate the knob only counter clockwise. I presume that is correct. The loterature gave instructions for different Ryobi String Trimmers, of either clockwise or counter clockwise, but not for Homelite.
But more important, there were no instructions on how to let out additional string when needed.  I tried hitting the head on the ground and the knob few off.
How is string extended when needed on the Ryobi ACO4150T string head.
Hope you can help.

Answer
Looking at the part number the head is a bump style.  When you bump it on the ground line should extend.

Curved shaft and straight shaft trimmers often turn opposite directions.  If the string is not installed correctly you will never get it to feed out.

Did the head come with any directions?  If in doubt, try winding the string the other direction and see if that solves the problem.
