Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): craftsman Kohler drive belt, transmission pulley, drive pulley

Question
I have a craftsman Kohler 15.5 HP #917.259551, The mower belt had been slipping and blades would not turn properly, I replaced it made a few circles to check it and it worked fine, the old one was not broke just worn and stretched. After checking went to put mower away parked in front of shed got off moved somethings around got back on mower and would not go into gear and squealed when releasing brake. Have discovered belt has slipped off at transmission pulley under battery and I am unable to get it out without having to remove the transmission pulley there is a nut holding the fan and pulley on, however the pulley just spins when I turn the nut. Is there a trick to removing the pulley? What could have all of a sudden caused this?

Answer
Hi Troy,

Without the Size and Model Serial No. of the Kohler engine I am not able to access the service manual that is available on the Kohler Website.

I would suggest you visit theKohler website for more information about your complication.

It would seem that the reason the pulley is spinning is most likely due to the cable that engages the drive pulley isn't taut, or is malfunctioning in some fashion.  Check the manual!
