Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Snapper Lawn Mower - Runs Rough, snapper lawn mower, variable speed drive

Question
I have a snapper push lawn mower.  I'm not sure of the model, but it's 6HP B&S motor, variable speed drive, rear drive high wheel, electric start, CA model.  It runs really rough even at max throttle.  I smell uncombusted fuel when using it (too rich?).  It lacks power and can hardly mulch the grass as I mow.

At the beginning of this season, I overfilled the oil--even to the point that i had oil pouring out of the air filter (shame on me!).  I drained it and filled it to the appropriate level.  Also this season I had to replace the engine mounting bolts (engine to the deck) as they had all rattled themselves out.

Any help?

Answer
It sounds like you may need to adjust the carburetor or possibly the governor is not set right.

That might be a good place to start troubleshooting.  It doesnt sound like the oil problem from early on would be a factor though.

Let me know how the troubleshoot goes.
