Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 17.5 hp kohler motor, john deer, flow problem

Question
I have a john deer 42" deck lawn mower. I got it for cheap due to the fact that it was running rough. I put a new fuel filter on it and took the carb apart and i found some dirt in the bulb. i also checked the diagphram in the fuel pump, and also changed the spark plug.  it seems to be chugging at high rpm and wanting to die at low rpm. i am some what of a mechanic and i think it has to be a fuel flow problem but i am having problems narrowing it down. can you please help?

Answer
could very well be fuel issue. Did you take the jet out and clean it when you had the carb apart? Sometimes the small ports within the carb itself get plugged and the only fix would be totally soaking it in carb cleaner for a day or so. You can usually buy a new carb for them pretty affordable.
