Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman/Honda 16.5 Hp, GXV-EXA2, honda craftsman

Question
Having issues with this engine. Compression is 100psi, new plugs properly gapped, fire at both, new air filter, oil & filter and cleaned carb out but it was not dirty. ISSUE: It will run like a champ until 15-30 minutes and then suddenly lose power. Have to choke for a while but if I reduce rpm it will run "ok" enough to get me back to the garage. If I put any strain on the engine after that point, it won't comply, ie. dies. WILL run if I choke, but not for long. WHAT'S WRONG??? Timing belt? Lost as to what I need to do other than spend $700 and put a new engine in it, which I really can't afford. THANKS!!!!

Answer
I haven't had one of these in yet but my first thought would be fuel delivery.  If this has a fuel pump, that would be my prime suspect.  I doubt seriously that you need a new engine.  Honda does make the best one out there and most problems are pretty minor.

If you have a fuel pressure gauge or can borrow or buy one, then I would install a T-fitting in the line after the pump and check the fuel pressure which should be around 5-7psi I believe.  Then when the engine starts to act up, check the pressure again and see if it has dropped.  Fuel pumps will often fail just like you describe.

If you don't have a fuel pump let me know and we'll have to think of something else.  Thanks, PK.
