Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): flywheel key, motor shaft, keyway

Question
QUESTION: I have a B&S model 281702 Type 0020-01 code 8802-1811 12hp, that breaks the flywheel key.It has a pull start and electric start. I don't have the adapter shaft that screws into the crank and then into the clutch on top, the local repair shop gave me the 9/16 bolt thats used on the electric start. I used the mower about 2hrs and the key broke, I replaced it a few times now it breaks right away. I'm using B&S # 5002 keys from Sears, its supposed to be the replacement,it fits fine, the original is B&S# 222698S.

ANSWER: If the keyway keeps breaking than I would have to guess that the shaft of the engine is bent? The flywheel has a keyway to protect the motor in case you hit something with the blades. If you did not have a keyway it would send a rod out the side of the engine! The first thing I would check is if the shaft is bent?

QUESTION: Its on a Snapper rear engine rider model 281011BE. It is missing the clutch and the adapter shaft that screws into the crank and clutch and whatever other parts are needed to connect to the rewind and housing (which I have)  I find no listing from the parts diagram from B&S. Right now I have the bolt to hold the flywheel on from the B&S dealer, it has an electric start. Do you know what parts would go with it? B&S engine model 281702 Type 0020-01 code 8802-1811 12hp,

Answer
I am not sure,on the underside of the mower where the motor shaft comes down through the tractor you can see if that shaft is bent? There should be two pulleys on it one for the drive and one for the deck! If that shaft got bent somehow it will keep breaking the flywheel key!
