Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): roto tiller problem, briggs stratton, freight train

Question
I have a "Yard Machine 5.5 HP OHV Briggs & Stratton roto tiller. I bought it used. The seller stated he used it twice. When you start it it smokes like a freight train. It then stalls out. When it stalls it dumps raw fuel into the carb. Can you tell me what is wrong?

Answer
You need to go ahead and replace the carburetor more than likely.  The oil needs to be changed as well.  Do not run the engine like this or you will throw the rod.  It sounds like you have a carburetor with a sticking float or needle.  You could probably rebuild it, but the cost of cleaner to do it right would be about what the new carb would cost and you'd have no guarantee it will come clean.  Clean the tank and replace the fuel lines as well.  Thanks, PK.
