Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Engine Pull start not working, pb blaster, crank shaft

Question
I have a Briggs & Stratton Model 19G412 Type 1129E1 Code 980731Y0 engine on a Generac Generator. My problem is the pull start will not engage the crank shaft to start the engine. Pulling on the cord is easy but does not turn over the engine.
What parts do I need or can this be lubed somehow to allow the pawls to engage properly? How do I dismantle this to take a look?
Your help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Bob P

Answer
The starter housing can be removed in one piece with the rest of the flywheel shroud.  If you have the plastic pawl type starter, pull the rope with the starter off and you can see if they protrude and retract.

You may have the metal clutch though which sounds more like your problem.  It will have metal balls inside that catch on pawls inside the clutch.  Remove the starter/blower housing and if there's a clutch that sticks up, remove the flat cover and see if the ball bearings are rusted up.  This is a very common problem.  A little PB Blaster and a rag fixes things.  Thanks, PK.
