Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Great Dane Battery wont stay charged, kohler command, key switch

Question
I have an older Great Dane Chariot 61" with the Kohler Command 25hp engine. I have replaced the battery twice in three months and now I have to charge or jump it every time I go to use it. Is there some famous problem part that I can replace or this is just going to happen due to age?

Answer
First you have to establish if the alternator is charging.  With a voltmeter check the battery voltage with the key off and then again with the engine running.  There should be a jump of a volt or two when running.  If not, then you have a problem in the charging system somewhere.

If there is a jump, then you'll need to look for voltage leaks at the key switch when the key is off.  It can be difficult to find a voltage leak.

Alternatively you can install a shut-off switch on the battery cable.  These used to be pretty popular on tractors and boats and should be available at an auto parts store.

Let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks, PK.
