Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): engine wont start, spec numbers, safety switch

Question
I have a Hustler Z with Kohler engine.  Ran well all day and now wont start...cranks but wont start.  Replaced spark plug.  Fuel filter and lines OK.  Am I missing a bad safety switch?  And how can I tell?
tks

Answer
Well in general, I would remove the air filter and pour a dribble of fuel into the carb, and then try to start.  If it starts and dies, then you know that you have a fuel problem.

If that gives you nothing, you need to remove the plug and then plug the wire back on, and lay the side of the plug against the metal
of the engine and crank, and have someone look for spark while cranking.

If you have spark, then we need to look at the valves/compression.

If you don't have spark, we need to eliminate the switches, and also determine if your engine has "Smartspark", which has it's own
set of problems.  Either way, I need to know your engine's
model and spec numbers.  So if you can find those and get back to me,
as well as what you have found out.

Thanks,
