Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Engine on a John Deere 316 does not run, john deere 316, electronic ignition system

Question
Hello,  My name is Steve and I have a friend that has a John Deere model 316 with a Onan P218G engine on it that doesn't run.  I have been trying to get this lawnmower to run for about a month now and I am about ready to give up.  I'm getting a little bit of spark and plenty of gas.  I changed out the pickup and the rotor for the electronic ignition system thinking it didn't have enough spark but that didn't fix the problem.  The only thing that I can see that looks to be out of the ordinary is that the ignition coil is extremely hot.  I purchased another coil and that didn't make a difference.  The serial number of the engine is L873303562.  I was also wondering what the condenser that hooks to the ignition coil is for?  I am not getting anything whatsoever.  The engine has compression but I will have to put a compression gauge on both cylinders to verify that.  If you could give me some direction to look I would appreciate it very much.  Thanks, Steve

Answer
There is a control box that could be the problem, and the condenser
could be a problem, I am not familiar too much with Onan.
The ignition control box likely replaced points, and the condenser
would prevent arcing with the points, so if it is bad, it could be
wreaking havoc with the control box, so I would try that first, as the
ignition control is likely very expensive.
