Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): flooding garden tractor, vertical shaft, matter what type

Question
Hello:
I have a garden tractor with a 11hp vertical shaft B&S motor, engine model 253707, type 0141-02. After sitting for any period of time, it is very difficult to start. I pulled the plug and it is wet, I removed the air cleaner and there is a puddle of gas in the passage to the carb. Aside from a faulty float/needle seat, is there any other reason why it would be “flooding” itself when it sits. Thanks.
Bob

Check for stuck float, plugged fuel filter or fuel line. Some tanks have a screen inside them to catch larger particles as a 2nd filter, and some also have a inline fuel filter. If everything checks ok, the passages inside the carb are plugged, follow the cleaning procedure outline in the manual to be sure you only have to do the job once!

If you remove the carb, or disassemble it, be sure to write down how it is set-up now, to save fumbling later! No matter what type you have, a rebuild kit is inexpensive and will cure 90% of all carb problems. The first thing to do if the engine will run but acts funny is to try to simply adjust the carb slightly. Note the position of the screws now, in case you have to return them to the original positions. It is recommended only experienced do-it-yourselfer attempt carb repair with out a manual.I have included a break down to help you clean and repair your carb.
